Lilo & Stitch Actor David Hekili Kenui Bell Passes Away

The film world is feeling a deep loss. David Hekili Kenui Bell, the actor who recently made his mark in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, has passed away. His sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook. No cause of death was mentioned in her post.

She described him in the most heartfelt way. “Sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome,” she wrote. Her words painted the picture of a man full of life and kindness. David wasn’t just her brother. He was someone who left an impression on everyone around him.

From the Islands to the Screen

David was a proud native Hawaiian. He brought a unique and real voice to every role. And his journey wasn’t just about acting. He was also deeply rooted in his community. He worked as an assistant airport superintendent at Kona International Airport. You could even hear his voice over the PA system when landing in Kona. That’s how much he loved being part of the local experience.

He studied at Kalani High School and later attended Hawaii Community College and Kapiolani Community College. His roots in Hawaii stayed strong, even while he moved through the world of film and entertainment.

Acting That Felt Real

David was a member of SAG-AFTRA. He had roles in Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I.. He was the kind of actor who felt natural on screen. His charm and local knowledge came through in every performance. That’s what made his appearance in Lilo & Stitch stand out.

In the 2025 live-action remake, David took on a familiar, fun role. Remember the tourist who kept dropping his mint chocolate chip ice cream in the original? David played a Hawaiian version of that moment. He drops his shaved ice in shock while watching a portal open. It was a simple scene, but David gave it heart and humor.

A Passion for Film and People

Just two weeks before his passing, David shared his audition tape for the role he called “Big Hawaiian Dude.” He also posted behind-the-scenes photos from the set. He celebrated not just the cast, but the local crew that helped bring the movie to life.

In an earlier post, he wrote about the joy of being part of the film. He praised the team behind the scenes in Hawaii. He called them the true stars. That’s the kind of person David was. He saw value in others and never hesitated to show appreciation.

Looking Ahead to What Could Have Been

David had more projects in the works. He was in post-production for The Wrecking Crew, an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film. It stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista as half-brothers trying to solve a murder. David had a part in that world too, and fans were excited to see him on the big screen once again.

His sister shared more about his creative life. David loved voiceovers, acting, and traveling with his dog Brutus as an ambassador for Kona Brew. He embraced his culture fully. His ability to speak English, Hawaiian, and Pidgin made him stand out.

Remembering a Local Gem

David Bell wasn’t just another actor. He was someone who brought his heritage, humor, and heart to everything he did. From Kona Airport to the big screen, he made people smile. And in every role, big or small, he represented Hawaii with pride.

His passing is a big loss to the local film community and to everyone who knew him. But his work and his aloha spirit will continue to be remembered.
