Jillian Michaels Reveals Why She Left California for Good

Fitness trainer Jillian Michaels has opened up about why she left California in 2021, moving from Los Angeles to Miami with her wife, DeShanna Marie Minuto, and her children. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Michaels said a mix of personal safety concerns, political frustrations, and worsening state issues led her to make the move.

One major turning point came in July 2012, when a man broke into her Malibu home while she was watching TV with her young son and then-partner. The intruder, a 30-year-old repeat offender, stole her purse and car. When police caught him, they found duct tape and a video camera in the trunk — leading Michaels to fear he may have had darker intentions. He was sentenced to 17 years in prison but was released early in 2020 under Governor Gavin Newsom’s pandemic-era policy.

Michaels also cited the state’s 2018 wildfires, which she blamed on “mismanaged forest, stifling overregulation, dry reservoirs, and an underfunded fire department,” along with California’s high taxes, housing crisis, and what she called “weaponized red tape.” She said recovery efforts were bogged down by excessive permits, zoning laws, labor rules, and environmental reviews.

On the homelessness issue, Michaels questioned why billions spent on emergency programs had shown little progress, alleging that funds may be getting “siphoned off by corrupt NGOs and politically connected contractors.”

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Michaels recalled a childhood of horseback riding in the Santa Monica Mountains and surfing in Malibu. But in the end, she said she couldn’t stay in a state “where safety is a privilege, not a right.”
