James Gunn Praises The Batman 2 Script: What Did He Reveal?

James Gunn always finds a way to drop a line that gets people talking. This time, it’s about The Batman 2. Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin wrapped up the script for The Batman: Part II in June 2025. Fans were buzzing about it for weeks. Then Gunn added his voice to the buzz.

What did Gunn say about the script?

Gunn was on the red carpet for the Superman premiere when Deadline asked him if he read Reeves’ new script. They also tossed in a fun question about Bat-Mite. Gunn laughed at the Bat-Mite bit first. Then he got straight to the point and called the script “great.”

It was short but enough to send fans into another round of theories. Bat-Mite is not exactly the villain type. He’s more of a weird fanboy who keeps bugging Batman just to watch him work. He’s popped up in comics for decades but never really crossed over in a big way on screen.

Is Bat-Mite really part of the new movie?

The Batman movies from Reeves are dark and gritty. So a goofy character like Bat-Mite feels like a stretch. But Gunn’s laugh hints he found the question funny more than real. People love to dream about unexpected cameos though.

The first The Batman movie hit theaters in March 2022. Robert Pattinson played the caped crusader in a version that felt closer to a noir detective film. It worked. The movie did great at the box office and critics loved it too. That’s why Reeves built a whole plan around it. He called it the Batman Epic Crime Saga.

How does The Batman fit in the DC universe now?

Things changed when James Gunn and Peter Safran stepped in to shape the new DC Universe. The Batman’s gritty world didn’t really blend with the other big heroes like Superman or Wonder Woman. So DC gave it the Elseworlds tag. That means it’s a separate timeline. Not connected to the main DCU. But rumors keep popping up about Pattinson’s Batman maybe jumping over someday.

So far, The Batman’s world has grown slow but steady. We got The Penguin show in 2024. Fans liked seeing Colin Farrell back in that role. Before that, there was The Riddler: Year One comic in 2022. Small pieces adding layers to Reeves’ Gotham.

Reeves posted a photo on X showing him and Tomlin with the finished script. They didn’t say much else but the photo was enough. Fans went wild with guesses about who might show up. Will Joker come back? Will Two-Face get teased? Nobody knows for sure.

Right now, The Batman: Part II has a date set for October 1, 2027. That feels far away but in Batman fan time, it’s tomorrow. Gunn calling the script great just makes the wait a bit more fun.
