It’s Official: Utah Hockey Club Is Now the Utah Mammoth

The secret’s out — and this time, it’s not just a rumor. On Wednesday, the Utah Hockey Club officially revealed its new name: the Utah Mammoth. Fans had been speculating for weeks, especially after a YouTube slip-up gave it away early. But now, the Mammoth name, logo, and identity are proudly out in the open.

It marks a fresh start for the team that only recently found a new home in Salt Lake City after relocating from Arizona. And if early reactions are any sign, Utah’s newest pro franchise is about to become one of the most talked-about in the NHL.

Why the Name “Mammoth”?

The choice isn’t just about sounding cool — though let’s be honest, “Utah Mammoth” does sound pretty intimidating.

The team explained that mammoths roamed the Utah region over 10,000 years ago and were known to charge in herds at speeds of over 25 miles per hour — the same kind of speed you see from top NHL skaters today.

It’s a name that connects the past to the present. It’s tough, historic, and uniquely tied to Utah. The ownership group, Ryan and Ashley Smith, said the process was all about community input. And they weren’t kidding.

“The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together,” they said in a statement.

How Did the Fans Choose the Name?

So how did we get here?

The naming process involved four rounds of community voting, starting with a massive list of 20 names. That list was cut down to six:

  • Utah Blizzard
  • Utah HC (Hockey Club)
  • Utah Mammoth
  • Utah Outlaws
  • Utah Venom
  • Utah Yeti

Fans voted again, but “Yeti” had to be removed after a branding conflict with YETI coolers.

In the final round, the top choices were Utah Hockey Club, Mammoth, and Wasatch. But Wasatch was later swapped out for Outlaws after just one night of voting. In the end, Mammoth won.

Over 520,000 fans took part in the early votes, showing just how excited Utah is to have its own NHL identity.

What Does the New Logo Look Like?

Let’s talk design.

The new logo is bold and meaningful. It features a mammoth head with large, curved tusks forming the shape of a “U.”
At the top sits the Wasatch Mountain Range, and the whole image is outlined by a Utah-shaped silhouette. An “M” is also tucked along the left side of the logo.

The color scheme includes:

  • Rock Black
  • Salt White
  • Mountain Blue

You’ll see the Mammoth logo on home jerseys, while the word “Utah” will appear on road jerseys. And yes, the team’s new rallying cry is already making waves: “Tusks Up.”

What’s Next for the Utah Mammoth?

This was a big year for the team — its first full season in Salt Lake City after moving from Phoenix, where they played as the Arizona Coyotes. The Mammoth finished the season with a 38-31-13 record, landing sixth in the Central Division.

And there’s more good news.

Just this week, Utah landed the fourth overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft, after winning the second drawing in the draft lottery. That’s a big opportunity to start building a future contender.

What’s the Buzz Like in Utah?

The energy is real.

Merchandise is already flying off the shelves at the Delta Center, and social media is full of Mammoth logos, “Tusks Up” posts, and fan-created graphics. The early leak of the YouTube channel name only built more hype. And now that it’s official, Utah’s hockey fans finally have something of their own to rally behind.

From prehistoric power to modern-day NHL speed, the Utah Mammoth are here to make a mark — not just in the Western Conference, but across the league.
