Is Squid Game: America Really Happening? David Fincher’s New Spin-Off Explained

If you watched the last moments of Squid Game Season 3, you probably did a double take. Right at the end, Cate Blanchett pops up in an alley in Los Angeles. No lines. No big reveal. Just a nod. But fans knew exactly what it meant.

Netflix isn’t done with Squid Game. Not even close.

Why Did Cate Blanchett Show Up?

Cate’s cameo didn’t happen by accident. Her role is listed as a “Special Appearance.” But if you know how Netflix works, you know they don’t waste big stars like that. She’s the link.

The final shot moves the story from Korea to Los Angeles. That sets the stage for a whole new spinoff called Squid Game: America. The twist? It’s not just a remake. It’s an expansion. A new layer on top of the story we already know.

Who’s In Charge Of Squid Game: America?

Netflix pulled in a heavy hitter. David Fincher. This is the same guy who gave us Fight Club, Mindhunter, The Social Network. He knows how to mess with your head.

He’s teaming up with Dennis Kelly, the creator of Utopia. So expect mind games, conspiracies, and twisted plots. Kelly is handling the script. Fincher will direct, but we don’t know yet if he’ll shoot every single episode.

When Does Filming Start?

According to reports, Squid Game: America is aiming for a December shoot in L.A. That might sound soon, but Fincher is a busy man. He’s shooting The Adventures of Cliff Booth from July to December. If the plan sticks, he’ll jump right from one set to another.

It’s tight. But Fincher isn’t new to marathon work schedules. He’s had a deal with Netflix for years and just signed on for three more.

Is This Just Fan Service Or Something Bigger?

A lot of people thought Squid Game would end with Gi-hun’s story. But that last scene changed everything. Cate Blanchett’s Recruiter means the games are global. Los Angeles is just one more arena.

It’s not a remake. It’s a spinoff that expands the lore. New players. New stakes. New masks. The same brutal game underneath.

Fincher plus Kelly plus Blanchett? That’s not just fan service. That’s a big swing. Netflix wants Squid Game to be more than a one-country story. Now, America’s next in line.
