How to Train Your Dragon Nears 200M, Lilo & Stitch Passes 850M at Global Box Office
Two classic childhood favorites are making major waves at the box office again. This time, in live-action form. How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch are winning hearts, raking in millions, and proving that family films still rule the big screen.
How to Train Your Dragon Flies High in Its First Weekend
The brand-new live-action How to Train Your Dragon is off to an incredible start. The movie just pulled in a huge $197.8 million worldwide in its debut. That includes $83 million from North America alone. Families clearly rushed to the theatres for this one.
The film was directed and written by Dean DeBlois, who also worked on the animated version. It’s set in the Viking world of Berk and retells the emotional friendship between a boy named Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless. Fans who loved the original are loving this reimagined version too.
Internationally, the movie brought in a strong $114 million from 81 countries. Mexico led the way with $14 million, followed by the UK and Ireland with $11.2 million, and China matching that with another $11.2 million.
The film’s budget was around $150 million. So, in just a few days, it’s already covered a big part of its production cost. A sequel is already on the way, with How to Train Your Dragon 2 set to release in 2027.
Lilo & Stitch Races Past $850 Million
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch has become a massive hit. It’s now made $858 million globally and it’s only in its fourth week. That puts it on track to possibly become 2025’s first movie to hit the $1 billion mark.
This sweet story about a lonely girl and her mischievous alien friend continues to charm kids and adults alike. Over the last weekend, it pulled in another $31.1 million from 52 markets. Its international total now stands at $491 million.
Released over the Memorial Day weekend, it’s kept a strong hold on theatres. Families are loving the nostalgia, humor, and heart the film brings. It’s one of those movies that parents enjoy just as much as their kids.
Mission: Impossible Reaches a Milestone Too
Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has also crossed the $500 million mark globally. So far, it stands at $506 million. But with a huge production budget close to $400 million, it’s going to be tough for this one to turn a big profit in theatres alone.
Tom Cruise fans showed up. But in a year packed with big family movies, even this action blockbuster is facing stiff competition.
A Strong Summer for Family Films
With How to Train Your Dragon kicking things off with nearly $200 million, and Lilo & Stitch closing in on a billion, family films are stealing the spotlight this summer. And audiences are clearly here for it.
