Hollywood Agent’s Son Dies by Suicide After Facing Triple Murder Charges
The tragic and deeply disturbing case of Samuel Bond Haskell IV has taken another turn. Haskell, 37, who had been charged with the brutal murders of his wife and her parents, was found dead by suicide in his Los Angeles County jail cell over the weekend. His death comes just days before he was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing.
Haskell was being held without bail and was facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. He had pleaded not guilty to the murders of his wife, Mei Haskell, her mother Yanxiang Wang, and her stepfather Gaoshan Li. The alleged killings, which took place in the home they all shared in Tarzana, California, shook the community and made headlines due to their horrifying nature.
What do we know about the murders?
This case drew national attention not only because of the gruesome details but also due to who Haskell was. He is the son of Sam Haskell III, a prominent figure in Hollywood who previously served as the worldwide head of television for William Morris. He once represented big names like Dolly Parton, George Clooney, and even Prince Edward. His son’s story, however, would become one of horror rather than fame.
In November 2023, a torso was discovered in a black garbage bag behind a strip mall in Encino, just five miles from Haskell’s home. That torso was later confirmed to belong to his wife, Mei. The body was so mutilated that the coroner’s office needed over a month to positively identify it.
The same day that body parts were found, a group of day laborers told authorities they had been hired by Haskell to haul away black plastic bags from his home. After opening one of the bags and finding human remains inside, they returned both the bags and the money and alerted police. Initially, their warnings weren’t taken seriously due to a language barrier. But it wasn’t long before authorities connected the dots.
Surveillance footage later showed Haskell disposing of a black trash bag at the same Encino strip mall. While Mei’s torso was recovered, the bodies of her parents have never been found.
Who was Mei Haskell, and what was life like in their home?
Mei had come to the United States from China to study accounting. She met Haskell while attending Cal State Northridge. After marrying, the couple had three children. Mei’s parents later emigrated from China to help raise the kids. According to her uncle, Mei was the household’s primary earner, juggling multiple jobs. It’s unclear what work, if any, Haskell did. Some believe his family may have financially supported him.
By all accounts, Mei was responsible, hardworking, and family-oriented. Her sudden and violent death, along with the disappearance of her parents, left her loved ones shattered.
The case raised many questions about domestic violence, privilege, and mental health. And now, with Haskell’s suicide, the legal process has come to an abrupt halt.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman released a statement calling Haskell’s death “one last cruel act.” He pointed out that the family has now been denied a chance to see justice served and to speak about their grief in court.
Haskell’s lawyer, Joseph A. Weimortz Jr., told NBC News that his client was more afraid of a media circus than prison itself. “Ultimately, my client was even willing to take his own life, believing that it would end this terrible chaos,” he said. “The Haskell family grieves every single life lost in this case.”
This story is one of unimaginable loss. A mother. A father. A daughter. Three young children now left without parents. A family torn apart by violence, and a courtroom that will never get its day.
