Gina Carano’s Return to Star Wars? Actress Reaches Settlement With Disney and Lucasfilm
Gina Carano, who gained a strong fan following for her role as Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, might soon make a comeback to the Star Wars universe. The actress, a former MMA fighter turned Hollywood star, was dropped from the hit Disney+ series in 2021 following a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter). Now, over three years later, she has settled her lawsuit with Disney and Lucasfilm—and the door to her return might be opening once again.
Carano’s Fallout With Disney
Carano was written out of The Mandalorian after sharing a post on X in February 2021 where she compared the treatment of conservatives in the U.S. to the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust. The comment sparked major backlash, and Disney and Lucasfilm swiftly ended their association with her. She was not included in Season 3 of the series.
In 2024, Carano took legal action. She filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm for wrongful termination and discrimination, seeking $75,000 in damages and a chance to be recast in the Star Wars franchise. The lawsuit gained unexpected support from tech billionaire Elon Musk, who funded her legal efforts through X Corp.
Settlement Reached With Hints of a Future Collaboration
On August 7, 2025, Variety reported that a settlement had officially been reached. Lucasfilm shared a statement that surprised many:
“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
While the statement does not confirm any specific roles or appearances, the wording strongly suggests that Disney and Lucasfilm are open to collaborating with Carano again.
Gina Carano Responds on X
Shortly after the announcement, Carano posted a heartfelt message on X, expressing gratitude to everyone involved in helping her during the legal battle. She specifically thanked Elon Musk for funding her lawsuit, despite never having met him.
“I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm …which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force,” she wrote.
“I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk…a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit. Thank you Mr. Musk and @X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return.”
She closed her message by thanking her fans for their support and said she’s excited for the next chapter of her journey in the arts.
Could Cara Dune Return?
In The Mandalorian, Gina Carano played Cara Dune, a fierce ex-shock trooper turned mercenary who becomes an ally to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal). Her character was popular with fans and played a significant role in both Season 1 and Season 2. However, her absence from Season 3 left a noticeable gap.
Now that the legal battle is over, speculation is growing about whether she might return. While The Mandalorian series has wrapped up with its third season, the story will continue in the upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is expected to premiere in 2026. Still, it’s unclear if Carano will appear in the movie.
However, Lucasfilm’s statement leaves the door open for her to appear in other Star Wars projects. One possible direction could involve her character being recruited again by the New Republic Special Forces, a plotline hinted at in earlier seasons.
Where To Watch The Mandalorian
The Mandalorian is currently available to stream on Disney+. Whether or not Gina Carano’s Cara Dune returns to the galaxy far, far away, fans can revisit her past performances and keep an eye out for future updates.
For now, the force appears to be shifting in Gina Carano’s favor.
