Gina Carano Settles Lawsuit With Disney and Lucasfilm Over ‘Mandalorian’ Firing
Gina Carano and Disney have officially buried the hatchet. The former Mandalorian star has reached a settlement with Disney and Lucasfilm after filing a high-profile lawsuit over her controversial firing from the hit Star Wars series.
Carano, 42, filed the lawsuit back in February 2024, claiming she was unfairly booted from the show in 2021 for expressing conservative views on social media. In her suit, she alleged that the decision cost her millions in income, caused emotional distress, and violated her rights. She asked for reinstatement to the show or at least $75,000 in damages.
On Thursday, both sides confirmed the legal drama has come to an end — though they’re keeping the details of the deal under wraps. According to a joint statement from Lucasfilm, the agreement will “resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies.”
Lucasfilm Leaves the Door Open
In a surprise twist, Lucasfilm’s statement didn’t slam the door on Carano returning to the Star Wars universe. Quite the opposite.
“Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect,” the company said. “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
That’s a major shift in tone from the drama that unfolded after her firing, when Carano was cut loose following a string of controversial social media posts.
Carano Thanks Elon Musk for Legal Help
Carano also issued a statement through her agent, calling the settlement “the best outcome for all parties involved.”
“I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me,” she said.
She went on to give a major shoutout to Elon Musk, crediting the billionaire and X (formerly Twitter) for backing her lawsuit. “A man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit,” she said of Musk.
When the lawsuit was filed earlier this year, Carano had confirmed that Musk and his platform X would be covering the legal costs. The move followed a previous Musk promise to financially support users who believed they were discriminated against due to their activity on X.
Musk hasn’t commented publicly yet on the outcome of the case.
What Sparked the Lawsuit?
Carano’s firing made headlines back in 2021 when Lucasfilm announced she would no longer appear in The Mandalorian or any future Star Wars projects. The company pointed to her “abhorrent and unacceptable” social media behavior, including posts where she compared the political climate in the U.S. to Nazi Germany, mocked mask-wearers during the pandemic, and questioned the validity of the 2016 presidential election results — despite no evidence of widespread voter fraud.
In her lawsuit, Carano argued that male co-stars who made similar or equally controversial remarks were not subjected to the same punishment. She claimed there was a double standard in how Lucasfilm handled her case.
What’s Next for Carano?
While it’s still unclear if Carano will actually return to the Star Wars galaxy, her statement hints at big plans ahead in the arts. Whether that means acting, producing, or something entirely new, she’s ready to move forward.
And now that the courtroom chapter is closed, fans will be watching closely to see what her next move is — and whether that might include a surprising return to a galaxy far, far away.
