First Look at HBO’s New Harry Potter Series Excites Fans

The magic is starting all over again. HBO has officially kicked off production on its long-awaited Harry Potter TV series, and the first image is already sparking excitement. On Monday, the studio revealed a photo of 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin dressed as Harry himself, glasses and all. It’s a brand-new chapter, and fans around the world are watching closely.

This isn’t just another reboot. HBO plans to retell the original story from J.K. Rowling’s books across multiple seasons. The production is expected to stretch over a full decade, giving the story time to breathe in a way the films never could. And if the cast list is any hint, they’re going big.

Who’s stepping into the iconic roles this time?

Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, but he won’t be alone in carrying the story. Rory Wilmot has been cast as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, and Louise Brealey will take on the role of Madam Rolanda Hooch. Anton Lesser, known for intense roles, will play wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.

But what really got fans talking was the star power behind the adult characters. John Lithgow will step into the wise and mysterious role of Albus Dumbledore. Nick Frost is taking on the warm and lovable Hagrid. Janet McTeer will play Professor McGonagall, while Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape. That casting alone is turning heads.

The trio of kids playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione was announced back in May, though their full performances are still a mystery. With filming now underway at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, the same location where all eight films were shot, the atmosphere is expected to stay true to the original magic.

What will be different from the movies?

One major change is time. The films were limited to around two hours each, which meant entire subplots were cut or condensed. This new series is being called “a faithful adaptation,” which hints that it will include more character development, deeper story arcs, and maybe even scenes that fans have always wanted but never saw on screen.

The first season is scheduled to launch in 2027, and while that feels far away, there’s already serious buzz building. HBO has also brought on talented crew from The Crown, like director of photography Adriano Goldman and hair and makeup designer Cate Hall. That attention to detail could give the series the visual depth the books deserve.

There’s a lot riding on this show, but for now, just seeing Harry in his Hogwarts robes again feels like a warm welcome back.
