Erik Menendez Denied Parole After More Than 30 Years in Prison
Erik Menendez, one of the two brothers convicted of murdering their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989, has been denied parole by the California Board of Parole Hearings, officials confirmed Thursday.
The denial marks another major development in a case that shocked the world and became one of the most infamous televised trials of the 1990s. Erik, now 54, has spent over three decades behind bars.
Family’s Reaction
In a statement, the Menendez family said they were disappointed by the decision but remained supportive.
“While we respect the decision, today’s outcome was of course disappointing and not what we hoped for. But our belief in Erik remains unwavering,” the family said. “His remorse, growth, and the positive impact he’s had on others speak for themselves. We will continue to stand by him and hold to the hope he is able to return home soon.”
They added that attention would now shift to Lyle Menendez’s parole hearing, expressing cautious optimism that he might be granted release.
Why Parole Was Denied
The decision came just months after a Los Angeles judge reduced the brothers’ original life-without-parole sentences to 50-to-life in May, making them eligible for parole consideration.
Governor Gavin Newsom previously explained that before any release decision, forensic psychologists carried out detailed risk assessments. While both brothers had once been assessed as “low risk,” recent reports upgraded them to “moderate risk” following contraband violations.
According to prosecutors, Erik had been cited for possessing and dealing drugs, as well as helping inmates with tax fraud, while Lyle was accused of using contraband cellphones and “downplaying” his behavior.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who has strongly opposed their release, argued these violations showed a lack of rehabilitation. He described the Menendez murders as “mafia-like hits,” pointing to the brutal way their parents were shot multiple times inside their Beverly Hills home in 1989.
The Menendez Brothers’ Case
José and Kitty Menendez, wealthy Beverly Hills residents, were killed in August 1989. Erik was 18 and Lyle was 21 at the time.
Their first trial ended with a hung jury, but the brothers were convicted of murder in 1996. Prosecutors argued the killings were driven by greed, while the defense claimed years of physical and sexual abuse by their father pushed them to commit the crime.
Nearly 30 years later, the public remains divided over whether the Menendez brothers were ruthless killers or victims who struck back in desperation.
For now, Erik Menendez will remain in prison following the board’s decision, while his brother Lyle’s fate rests on the outcome of his own upcoming hearing.
