Eric Dane Opens Up About His ALS Diagnosis
Eric Dane, known for his role on Grey’s Anatomy, has spoken out for the first time since he revealed his ALS diagnosis. In an emotional interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, he shared how every day feels like a constant reminder of the disease. Dane said, “I wake up every day, and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening.” When Sawyer responded, “It’s not a dream,” he agreed, saying that his reality is very much real and not something he wishes to deny.
Facing ALS With Strength and Hope
Despite the heavy news, Dane tried to keep a hopeful outlook. He said, “I don’t think this is the end of my story. I don’t feel like this is the end of me.” The interview showed a vulnerable side of the actor, especially when Sawyer asked him who he called first after finding out about the diagnosis. This question brought tears to Dane’s eyes, revealing just how personal and difficult the moment was.
Dane shared his diagnosis publicly in April. He told People magazine, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” He also mentioned that he feels lucky to keep working and is looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria. Dane asked for privacy for himself and his family during this challenging time.
What Is ALS?
ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. According to the Mayo Clinic, it causes muscle control loss and can lead to problems with breathing and eating. It can also cause dementia. Most patients live about three years after diagnosis, but some can survive much longer. Famous people who have battled ALS include Stephen Hawking and Lou Gehrig himself, the legendary Yankees player.
Family and Career
Eric Dane is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart. They have two children together, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. Despite the diagnosis, Dane continues to focus on his family and work. His full interview with Diane Sawyer will air on Good Morning America on June 16 at 7 a.m. ET. Fans are sending their love and support as he shares this new chapter in his life.
