Did Britney Really Shoot Her Iconic Cover at Lenny’s Place? What Really Happened

For years, fans of Britney Spears believed a fun pop culture rumor: that the cover of her hit 2000 album Oops!… I Did It Again was shot at Lenny Kravitz’s house. Social media kept the story alive, with viral posts and Reddit threads treating it like a pop music Easter egg.

But after two decades of whispers and wild guesses, the truth is finally here. No, Britney didn’t pose in Lenny’s Miami mansion. In fact, the photo was taken almost 3,000 miles away.

Here’s Where It Really Happened

Photographer Mark Seliger’s executive producer, Ruth Levy, confirmed what fans have wondered about for years. “I can confirm the album cover was not shot at Lenny’s house,” she told Page Six.

Instead, Britney’s iconic image was created at Quixote Studios in West Hollywood, California. Seliger may be close friends with Kravitz, but that didn’t play into the shoot location at all.

A Spears historian who runs the popular fan page BritneysVault also helped set the record straight. The page shared background details that put the entire rumor to rest. And for fans who love Britney history, the truth is just as fascinating.

What Was the Set Like?

The album cover wasn’t a lucky accident or a reused set. Production designer Walter Barnett built the entire scene from scratch. He was inspired by 1960s design. Back in 2000, there was no Google Images, so Barnett had to dig through printed books and magazines for ideas.

He crafted a semicylindrical backdrop, then covered it with gold, button-tufted faux leather. To add more sparkle, he strung chandelier crystals on thin wire and hung them from above. Those shimmering crystals ended up draping over Britney’s shoulders, giving the whole shot a magical touch.

What Did Britney Wear?

In the photo, a then-18-year-old Britney stood confidently in a brown whipstitched crop top and matching low-rise pants. It was a defining look of the early 2000s, and the image would soon become one of the most recognizable album covers of the era.

The whole setup might seem simple today, but it was a masterclass in early Y2K style and visual storytelling. Barnett’s set design, Seliger’s photography, and Britney’s star power created a moment in music history.

Fun Fact: Zoë Kravitz Met Britney at the Shoot

Even though the shoot didn’t happen at Lenny’s house, the Kravitz connection wasn’t a complete myth. On the day of the shoot, Lenny Kravitz actually brought his daughter Zoë to the set to meet Britney.

Zoë was just 11 years old at the time, and Britney was already a massive star. Years later, Zoë shared the memory in an interview with Variety. She called the moment “very, very cool,” and admitted that Britney is “still a big deal to me.”

Relive the Album That Broke Records

Oops!… I Did It Again wasn’t just a visual success. The music spoke for itself. The album made history, selling 1.32 million copies in its first week in the U.S. That was the biggest debut by a female artist at the time.

Britney held that record for 15 years, until Adele’s 25 moved 3.38 million in 2015.

The album featured more than its title track. Fans still sing along to hits like:

  • “Lucky”
  • “Stronger”
  • “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know”

Celebrate 25 Years With the Special Edition

On the 25th anniversary of Oops!… I Did It Again, Britney released a special edition of the album. It includes new remixes, bonus tracks, and a chance for fans to rediscover her early sound with a fresh spin.

This release is a reminder of how much impact Britney had on pop music, fashion, and culture. She shaped an era, and this album helped define her legacy.
