Cynthia Erivo To Receive Santa Barbara’s Kirk Douglas Award For Excellence In Film

Cynthia Erivo is adding another honor to her already impressive list of achievements. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) has announced that the Oscar-nominated star will be the recipient of the 18th annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film. The award will be presented at a black-tie fundraiser on December 4, 2025, at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara.

A prestigious recognition

Each year, SBIFF hosts the Kirk Douglas Award, with proceeds supporting the festival’s educational initiatives. This year, all eyes will be on Erivo, who has already achieved the rare feat of winning a Grammy, a Tony, and an Emmy. Fans celebrated the news online, with one joking, “Cynthia Erivo collecting awards like Infinity Stones while Hollywood still struggles to script a decent sequel.”

Many others praised her versatility and talent:

  • “Congratulations to Cynthia Erivo for receiving the Kirk Douglas Award! A well-deserved recognition.”
  • “Cynthia’s the real deal, can’t wait to see her shine.”
  • “Huge congrats to Cynthia Erivo! Such a powerhouse talent and truly deserving of this honor.”

Michael Douglas on the honor

Michael Douglas, son of legendary filmmaker Kirk Douglas, released a statement highlighting why Erivo was chosen.
“Cynthia Erivo is a singular talent whose depth, range, and fearless commitment to her craft embody the spirit of excellence my father championed throughout his life. It’s entirely fitting that she receives the Kirk Douglas Award, which celebrates bold artistry and enduring impact in film,” he said.

About the event

The annual event begins with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and a tribute to the awardee. SBIFF describes the tribute as “clip packages” showcasing highlights of the honoree’s career, ending with the award presentation.

Tickets for the fundraiser start at $1,250 and are available through SBIFF’s official website.

Cynthia Erivo’s career so far

At just 37, Cynthia Erivo has become one of the most celebrated performers of her generation. She gained critical acclaim for her performance in Harriet (2019) and is set to star as Elphaba in Wicked. Her versatility across music, stage, and screen has made her one of the few performers close to EGOT status.

As one fan summed it up online: “Her talent transcends genres. From Wicked to Harriet, she’s been unstoppable.”
