Chris Robinson, ‘General Hospital’ and ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ Star, Dies at 86

Chris Robinson, the soap opera star best known for his role as Dr. Rick Webber on General Hospital, has passed away at 86. The news was shared by actor and musician MJ Allen on Facebook. Allen, who starred alongside Robinson in the 2022 film Just for a Week, wrote that the actor died peacefully in his sleep at his ranch near Sedona, Arizona. He had reportedly been dealing with heart failure, which was listed as the official cause of death.

From Hollywood beginnings to soap royalty

Robinson’s acting career kicked off in the early 1960s with roles in films like The Young Savages and Birdman of Alcatraz, both starring Burt Lancaster. His first big break on television came in 1967 when he joined the cast of the military drama 12 O’Clock High on ABC. He played Sgt. Alexander “Sandy” Komansky and stayed with the show for two seasons, solidifying his place in TV drama.

The rise of Rick Webber

But it was in 1978 that Robinson truly became a household name. That’s when he stepped into the role of Dr. Rick Webber on General Hospital. He became one of the central characters during the soap’s golden years, appearing on and off until 2013. His charm, presence, and chemistry with co-stars made him a fan favorite.

Robinson also became a pop culture moment with his Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup commercial, where he famously said, “I’m not a doctor but I do play one on TV.” The line became a catchphrase that stuck around for decades.

A career touched by drama, on and off screen

In the mid-80s, Robinson ran into legal trouble tied to tax evasion. As a result, he was temporarily replaced on General Hospital by All My Children’s Peter Bergman. But Robinson’s connection to the show was strong, and he eventually returned to GH, even making a final appearance in 2022 when his character met a dramatic end, killed by Scotty Baldwin in a shocking scene involving a candlestick.

Beyond General Hospital

Robinson didn’t limit his talents to just one soap. In the late 1980s, he played Jason Frame on Another World. Then in 1992, he joined The Bold and the Beautiful as Jack Hamilton, father to Taylor Hayes. He held that role until 2005.

His face also popped up on several classic shows over the years. He made guest appearances on Gunsmoke, 77 Sunset Strip, The Fugitive, Sea Hunt, Medical Center, and Barnaby Jones, among others.

Big screen moments

Though television was his mainstay, Robinson had a film career too. His movie credits included Because They’re Young, Lady in Cement, The Long Rope, Amy, Revenge Is My Destiny, and Savannah Smiles. His last role came in 2022 with the film Just for a Week where he played Ted Hurst.

A legacy and a loving family

Chris Robinson leaves behind a long career with more than 100 roles and a legacy in American television that spans six decades. He is survived by his wife Jacquie and his children Shane, Coby, Christian, Christopher, Chris, and Taylor, as well as several grandchildren. His presence on screen will be missed, but his work continues to live on in soap opera history.
