Boone County High School Varsity Basketball Player Jantje Wingo Passes Away, Suddenly Leaving His Family

The Florence, Kentucky, community is grieving the sudden and unexpected passing of Jantje Wingo, a young man whose energy, athleticism, and warm personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

Wingo, who wore jersey number 10 and stood 5’10” at 170 pounds, was a multi-sport athlete who gave everything he had on the field and on the court, and somehow still had more left over for the people around him.

Wingo came up through Boone County High School, where he became a fixture in two of the school’s most competitive programs.

He played varsity football for the Rebels beginning in 2016, suiting up through the 2018 season, and simultaneously built a basketball resume that stretched well beyond his high school years, with his Hudl profile showing team involvement with BCHS Boys Varsity Basketball running from 2016 all the way to 2025.

That kind of sustained commitment to the game speaks to how much athletics meant to him, not as a stepping stone, but as a genuine passion.

A Football Career That Grew Beyond Northern Kentucky

During his senior football season in the fall of 2018, Wingo put together a highlight reel that showed exactly what kind of player he was.

His Hudl timeline documents matchups against schools like Henry Clay High School, Highlands, Campbell County, Cooper, Simon Kenton, George Rogers Clark, Dixie Heights, South Oldham, and Holmes, among others. Those clips accumulated nearly 3,000 public views, reflecting the attention his play drew from coaches, recruiters, and fans across the region.

That attention eventually carried him beyond Northern Kentucky altogether. Western Kentucky University, which has mourned his sudden loss publicly, became his next chapter.
