Baltimore Autistic Social Media Star John West Dies of Natural Causes; Sister Des Reveals Hidden Health Battles

John West, the Baltimore-based social media personality who captured the hearts of over 1.3 million followers through his sister’s accounts, has passed away from natural causes.

His caretaker and legal guardian, known online as Des from the account @waxesbydes, announced on May 31, 2026, through a heartfelt post on both Instagram and TikTok.

Des shared a black-and-white photo of John alongside the words,

“In loving memory of my brother. RIP, my handsome guy.”

The post drew more than 110,000 comments within just three hours, reflecting the deep connection that John had built with people across the internet.

John was an autistic adult whose story first came to public attention in 2024 when Des gained legal custody of him after documenting what she described as abuse and neglect from his previous caretakers.

From that point on, she used her social media platform to share the joys and challenges of their daily life, including raising her child alongside caring for John.

His infectious smile, vibrant personality, and well-dressed appearance quickly made him a fan favorite, and followers often described watching him as a genuine source of happiness in their feeds.

Des Opens Up About John’s Long History of Health Challenges

Following the initial announcement, Des addressed the questions many followers had about what “natural causes” actually meant in John’s case.

In a follow-up post, she explained that John had quietly battled several serious health conditions over the years, many of which were unknown to the wider public.

“Many of you are new here and may have assumed that John was simply a healthy man with autism, but that wasn’t the case,” she wrote. “For years, he faced a number of serious health challenges. While his health had improved significantly over the last two years, he had a long history of medical issues.”

She revealed that John had suffered from severe dental infections that had gone untreated for decades, a condition that can place considerable strain on the heart over time.

He had also experienced blood in his urine and ongoing kidney problems. “There was much more to his story than what people saw online,” she added.

In a video statement, Des further clarified her use of the term natural causes, saying that nothing was done to John’s body and that he did not harm himself. He died as a result of illness, she stressed, urging followers who were unfamiliar with the term to look it up rather than speculate.

The outpouring of grief from the online community was immediate and overwhelming. Fans described John as a light, a pure soul, and someone who felt like family despite never having met him in person.

Many pointed to one of his most memorable moments online, his preparation for a college graduation, as a symbol of the joy and pride he brought to everyone watching.

Des had maintained roughly 700,000 followers each on Instagram and TikTok, where her content centered on the warmth and humor of everyday life with John and her daughter. For a community that had followed their journey closely, the loss of John West felt deeply personal.

Condolences continue to pour in from fans, fellow creators, and public figures alike.
