Andor Creator Apologizes for Cassian and Bix Romance
Andor has been praised for its gritty storytelling and emotional depth. But creator Tony Gilroy knew one storyline would spark some disappointment. That storyline? Cassian Andor’s romantic past with Bix Caleen.
Fans of Rogue One have long held onto the emotional bond between Cassian and Jyn Erso. Their final moments on the beaches of Scarif left a powerful impression. It was a quiet, heartfelt connection that felt like it could have been something more—if they had lived.
So when Andor introduced Bix as Cassian’s love interest, it hit a nerve for some fans.
Gilroy knew what he was doing
In a recent interview with Collider, Gilroy admitted he understood how deeply fans had invested in the Cassian and Jyn dynamic. “I felt bad for the people who had invested so much time in the fan fiction and stuff like that,” he said.
He acknowledged that while fan fiction isn’t canon, it still matters. “People worked hard on that stuff, and it meant a lot to them. You don’t want to trample on somebody’s flower garden,” he added. “But I have to do what I have to do. I’m sure there’s somebody who will never get over that. I apologize. I really do.”
Still a fan of Rogue One’s emotional finale
Gilroy didn’t dismiss what happened in Rogue One. He praised the elevator scene where Jyn and Cassian share a powerful, unspoken connection. But when it came to building Andor, he shifted focus to Cassian’s backstory.
He dove into the complex relationship between Cassian and Bix. According to Gilroy, they had a long history. “I think the first person they ever slept with is each other,” he said. “Who knows how old they were on Ferrix? Probably very, very young.”
He added that their connection wasn’t always romantic, but it was real. “Over time, they were together and not together. I think they have a very healthy idea of what the different calibrations of love are.”
So while Andor offered fans a different version of Cassian, Gilroy admits he understands the heartbreak it may have caused.
