Mortal Kombat II Release Date Delayed: Here’s Why the Sequel Is Skipping This Fall

Fans were hyped after Mortal Kombat II’s red-band trailer racked up a jaw-dropping 107 million views globally. So, what gives? Why is the brutal, action-packed sequel suddenly shifting gears and moving from this October to May 23, 2025?

Turns out, Warner Bros. and New Line think the movie has way more power in next summer’s prime slot than trying to fight its way through a crowded Halloween season.

Why Move Mortal Kombat II?

Originally slated for late October 2024, the sequel was about to enter a packed ring. That weekend, two other major films are dropping:

  • Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White
  • Paramount’s big-screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You

And let’s be real, Halloween weekend box office numbers tend to be… not great. Rather than risk getting buried, the studio is betting big on a May 2025 release, when theaters are buzzing and moviegoers are ready to spend.

It’s a smart move. This past May, Warner Bros. scored a hit with Final Destination: Bloodlines, which smashed franchise records with a $51.6 million opening and ended with a $301 million worldwide haul. They’re hoping Mortal Kombat II can follow the same path—and then some.

What We Know About the Sequel So Far

Mortal Kombat II is shaping up to be even bigger and bloodier than the 2021 hit. The cast includes:

  • Karl Urban as Johnny Cage
  • Lewis Tan as Cole Young
  • Mehcad Brooks as Jax
  • Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
  • Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
  • Chin Han as Shang Tsung
  • Joe Taslim as Bi-Han
  • Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion
  • Tadanobu Asano as Raiden
  • Tati Gabrielle, Damon Herriman, Adeline Rudolph, and Josh Lawson round out the returning and new fighters.

Reports say early test screenings were very strong, with fans praising the brutal fight scenes and franchise-faithful character arcs. And let’s face it—Johnny Cage’s long-awaited debut is enough to send fans into a frenzy.

The sequel is once again helmed by Simon McQuoid, with a screenplay by Jeremy Slater based on the legendary video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Production is backed by a power crew of producers: James Wan, Todd Garner, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid himself.

What’s the Plot?

In Mortal Kombat II, Earthrealm’s defenders are gearing up for their toughest challenge yet. Now joined by Johnny Cage, our champions face off in a brutal, no-holds-barred tournament to stop the rise of the tyrannical Shao Kahn. The fate of Earth hangs in the balance—and every fatality counts.

What’s It Up Against?

On its new release date—May 23, 2025Mortal Kombat II will face off against:

  • Amazon MGM Studios’ Is God Is
  • An untitled theatrical release from Neon

While the competition looks lighter compared to Halloween’s lineup, the new date gives MK2 room to dominate. Warner Bros. had actually already booked the May slot in advance, just in case.

The Big Picture

The Mortal Kombat film franchise has already earned $257.8 million globally across three movies. With summer blockbusters continuing to crush it at the box office, WB clearly believes the franchise deserves a high-stakes arena.

Fans might have to wait a bit longer, but judging by the buzz, action, and return of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and now Johnny Cage, the wait will be worth it.

Finish him… next summer.
