How Dexter: Resurrection Said Goodbye to Angel Batista in Episode 9

When you follow a show about a serial killer, you learn quickly that no one is safe.

Fans of Showtime’s Dexter have seen that truth play out over and over, even with the shocking death of Dexter Morgan himself in Dexter: New Blood. And now, in Episode 9 of Dexter: Resurrection, another beloved original has met a tragic fate.

This week, Angel Batista (David Zayas) took his final bow — and it was as heartbreaking as it was inevitable.

Batista’s Mission for Justice

From the start of Resurrection, Batista was determined to set the record straight.

He never believed James Doakes (Erik King) was the real Bay Harbor Butcher. He wanted to clear his old colleague’s name once and for all — even if it meant going after his old friend Dexter.

That pursuit led him to reconnect with Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee), and even Dexter’s son Harrison. Batista bent rules, made dangerous alliances, and worked relentlessly to expose Dexter’s truth.

The Fatal Confrontation

His mission came to a devastating end in Episode 9.

Batista walked straight into Leon Prater’s (Peter Dinklage) trap, landing on a gurney in a makeshift kill room. Prater, obsessed with Dexter, handed him the knife — hoping to watch him kill his old friend.

Instead, Dexter cut Batista free. In a chilling voiceover, he even hoped the two might team up again. But Batista, full of rage, attacked Dexter, telling him, “This is for Doakes and for Maria. Your bullshit has to stop.”

The fight ended brutally when Prater shot Batista five times. As he lay dying, Batista confronted Dexter one last time. “I need you to know, I didn’t kill Maria or Doakes,” Dexter pleaded. Batista, gasping, replied: “It was your fault. And now, I’m dying because of you.”

His last words were raw and unforgettable: “Dexter Morgan, fuck you.”

David Zayas on Batista’s Exit

Actor David Zayas admitted he knew Batista’s fate from the beginning of Resurrection.

“When they called me, they explained the storyline, and my first thought was, ‘Wow, that’s great TV.’ It’s bittersweet, but after 20 years, it feels right,” he told Deadline.

Zayas played Batista across all eight seasons of the original series, returned for New Blood, and reprised the role again in Resurrection. For him, this was the most fitting goodbye. “Anything else would have been a cop-out,” he said.

Batista’s Legacy

Zayas said he’s proud of Batista’s journey — a man of integrity who always pursued justice.

“I hope fans remember him as genuine, with a big heart, always seeking the truth,” he shared. “Even in the end, he stayed brave and did the right thing.”

Though he laughed about the idea of an afterlife spinoff with Maria Laguerta, Zayas admitted Angel Batista will always stay close to his heart.

What Comes Next

With just one episode left in Dexter: Resurrection, Dexter faces his own reckoning. Prater may have killed Batista, but Dexter won’t let him walk away untouched.

For now, fans are left mourning the loss of Batista — a salsero with a heart of gold, who died with dignity while fighting for the truth.

R.I.P. Angel Batista.
