Who Is Shellback? Meet the Producer Behind Taylor Swift’s New Album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’
Taylor Swift’s upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl, out October 3, marks a big reunion with Swedish producer Shellback, alongside his longtime collaborator Max Martin. The trio last worked together on Swift’s 2017 album Reputation, and fans are buzzing about their return.
From Metal Guitarist to Pop Hitmaker
Born Karl Johan Schuster in Sweden, Shellback started his music career as a heavy metal guitarist before shifting to pop production and songwriting. He began working with Max Martin in 2007, and in 2012, Swift brought them in to co-write and produce “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” and “22” for Red. These tracks helped launch Swift’s transition from country to pop.
Shaping Swift’s Pop Era
Shellback and Martin played a major role in Swift’s 2014 pop breakthrough 1989, producing hits like “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” and “Style.” The album won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2016. They also contributed to Reputation, Swift’s edgiest album at the time, before reuniting for the rerecordings of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version).
A Star-Studded Resume
Beyond Swift, Shellback has produced hits for Britney Spears (“If U Seek Amy,” “Criminal”), Pink (“So What,” “Raise Your Glass”), Maroon 5 (“Moves Like Jagger”), Ariana Grande (“Problem”), and Justin Timberlake (“Can’t Stop the Feeling!”).
Swift on Working With Shellback Again
Speaking on Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, Swift recalled that when she and Shellback first collaborated, they were both in their early twenties, learning from Martin. This time around, she said, “it felt like all three of us in the room were carrying the same weight as creators… I love it that much.”
A Private Life With Famous Followers
Despite his success, Shellback keeps a low profile, maintaining a private Instagram account with just over 1,000 followers — one of them being Harry Styles.
With Shellback’s track record and his history with Swift, The Life of a Showgirl is already shaping up to be one of her most anticipated albums yet.
