Michael Bay Exits Will Smith’s ‘Fast and Loose’ Over Creative Rift: What Really Happened
Michael Bay is officially out as director of Fast and Loose, Netflix’s upcoming action-thriller starring Will Smith. According to People, the explosive filmmaker known for Transformers and Bad Boys walked away from the project due to creative differences—particularly over the film’s tone. Now, Netflix is back on the hunt for a new director, with production still set to begin in 2026.
Creative Vision Collides: Bay vs. Smith
Sources say Bay was aiming to make Fast and Loose a high-octane action spectacle packed with the kind of jaw-dropping sequences he’s famous for. But Smith reportedly had a different take. He wanted the story to lean more into character depth and bring in a touch of humor.
That clash in vision proved too big to fix. While neither Bay, Smith, nor Netflix have officially commented, People reports the disagreement led to Bay’s quiet departure from the film.
This would’ve been a major reunion for the duo, who last worked together on Bad Boys II back in 2003. Their first team-up in 1995’s Bad Boys launched Bay’s directing career and helped cement Smith as a top-tier action star. Fast and Loose could’ve brought that full circle—but not anymore.
What’s Fast and Loose About, Anyway?
The film follows a crime boss who wakes up with amnesia after an attack and slowly discovers he was living a dangerous double life—one as a CIA agent and the other as a criminal kingpin. It’s part espionage, part identity thriller.
The script was originally developed by Jon and Erich Hoeber, with additional work by Chris Bremner and Eric Pearson. The project has been in Netflix’s pipeline for a while, and it initially had Bullet Train and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch attached.
But Leitch backed out in 2022—right before the Oscars controversy involving Smith—and chose to direct The Fall Guy instead.
Who’s Still Involved?
Despite Bay’s exit, Will Smith remains locked in as the film’s star and a producer. He’s joined by David Leitch and Kelly McCormick, who are producing under their 87North banner. Robert Simonds and Noah Fogelson will serve as executives for STXfilms.
Netflix is pushing ahead, aiming to get the production department fully up and running by 2026. That means the clock’s ticking to find a new director who can handle the scale of the story while balancing the mix of action and character-driven drama Smith wants.
Bay’s Busy Netflix History
Bay’s departure marks a significant loss for Netflix. His most recent film, Ambulance (2022) starring Jake Gyllenhaal, didn’t hit massive numbers but still showcased Bay’s action chops. He also previously directed 6 Underground for Netflix, a visually wild action flick led by Ryan Reynolds.
Fast and Loose could’ve been another wild ride in Bay’s Netflix partnership. But with creative sparks flying in opposite directions, the collaboration ended before cameras could even roll.
What’s Next for the Film?
With Smith still on board and a strong script in hand, Fast and Loose isn’t dead—it just needs a director who can blend the thriller’s intensity with Smith’s push for more emotional storytelling. Whoever Netflix taps will need to walk a tightrope between explosive set pieces and grounded character work.
The big question now: who will step in to replace Michael Bay and lead the next big Will Smith comeback project?
Stay tuned—this one’s far from over.
