Taylor Swift Gets Shaded by Ex Matty Healy’s Mom Denise Welch
Taylor Swift has found herself in the headlines once again, but this time it’s not because of her music. Denise Welch, mother of The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, made a surprising remark about the pop star during her recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live!
What Did Denise Welch Say About Taylor Swift?
When asked about her son’s brief romance with the 14-time Grammy winner, Welch didn’t mince words. “Not being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” the British soap actress and TV personality said, leaving the studio audience stunned.
She quickly clarified that her comment wasn’t meant as an attack. “Not that I have anything against her at all,” Welch added. “It was just — it was tricky.”
Welch, who is known for her candid nature, went on to make a pointed observation about Swift’s approach to songwriting. “You’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it,” she quipped, referring to Swift’s 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department.
Was Taylor Swift’s Album About Matty Healy?
Fans have long speculated that several tracks from The Tortured Poets Department were inspired by Swift’s whirlwind relationship with Healy. Songs like “Guilty As Sin,” “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus,” “Down Bad,” and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” are rumored to reference her brief time with the Somebody Else singer.
Though Welch didn’t delve into the details of the relationship, she did say that Matty took everything “in good grace” following the release of the album.
How Has Matty Healy Moved On?
Denise Welch also made it clear that her son has moved on with his life. “He is very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriella, who is gorgeous,” she said, referring to model Gabbriette Bechtel. “So, we’ve moved on.”
Healy, 36, and Swift, 35, briefly dated from May to June 2023, following her split from British actor Joe Alwyn. During that time, Healy was spotted at several of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts and the two were often seen together in New York City, including visits to the iconic Electric Lady recording studio.
An insider previously told Entertainment Tonight that their split was due to “incompatibility and scheduling conflicts.”
