Legendary Filipino Singer Freddie Aguilar Passes Away at 72

Freddie Aguilar, the iconic Filipino singer-songwriter known worldwide for his timeless hit “Anak,” has passed away at the age of 72. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, May 27, by Atty. George Briones, general counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), where Aguilar once served as national executive vice president.

Freddie Aguilar was a towering figure in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), shaping the Filipino soundscape with his soulful voice and powerful storytelling. His song “Anak,” released in 1977, is perhaps his most enduring legacy. The heartfelt ballad about parental love and remorse resonated deeply across cultures, leading to translations in 51 languages. It remains one of the best-selling Filipino songs ever.
