Steelers Release Ryan Watts After Neck Injury: What Fans Need to Know

Let’s walk through everything you need to know about Ryan’s situation — in a simple and conversational way.

Who Is Ryan Watts?

Ryan Watts is a 23-year-old safety who played college football at Texas, after transferring from Ohio State.
He made a big impression as a two-year starter for the Longhorns and was selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of last year’s NFL Draft.

Fans were excited about his potential. Standing tall with great instincts, Watts was seen as someone who could strengthen Pittsburgh’s secondary for years to come.

What Happened to Ryan Watts?

Everything changed during the Steelers’ preseason finale on August 24, 2024, against the Detroit Lions.
In what looked like a routine play, Ryan took a knee to the head and was diagnosed with a stinger — a nerve injury common in contact sports.

At first, it didn’t seem too serious. But as the weeks went on, concerns grew.
Watts never suited up during the regular season and spent his entire rookie year on injured reserve. Later tests revealed the injury was much more serious than anyone had thought.

He even underwent surgery this offseason in hopes of making a comeback, but sadly, doctors weren’t confident he could safely return to football.

Why Did the Steelers Decide to Release Him?

In a statement, Steelers General Manager Omar Khan explained:

“After consulting with our medical team, medical experts and Ryan’s representatives, we all agree that it is in Ryan’s best interest to discontinue playing football at this time.”

It’s a tough call, but it was made with Ryan’s long-term health as the top priority.
No championship, no contract, no dream is worth risking permanent neck damage or worse.

The Steelers also made it clear they’re standing by Ryan and will support him as he figures out his next steps beyond the football field.

Is Ryan Watts’ Football Career Over?

Right now, it sadly looks like it.
At just 23 years old, Ryan’s professional football career seems to be ending before it really even started.

Neck injuries, especially ones involving nerve damage, are incredibly serious. Even with modern medical advances, it’s often safest to walk away rather than risk catastrophic injury.

But Ryan is young, smart, and driven.
There’s no doubt he’ll find new ways to succeed off the field — maybe in coaching, scouting, or another role that keeps him connected to the sport he loves.

How Are Fans and Teammates Reacting?

Steelers Nation is heartbroken but supportive.
Many fans have flooded social media with messages of encouragement and gratitude for Ryan’s effort and heart.

Teammates have also voiced their respect, praising Watts for staying strong through months of uncertainty and difficult rehab work.

Sometimes, the toughest warriors are the ones who know when to put health first.
