Why Did the Grizzlies Fire Taylor Jenkins? Who Is Taylor Jenkins?

In a move that stunned NBA fans and insiders alike, the Memphis Grizzlies have officially parted ways with head coach Taylor Jenkins — ending a five-year run that once looked like the foundation of the team’s future.

Jenkins, who took over as head coach in 2019, was fired mid-season in March 2025, just as the team continues to struggle near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Despite his past success and development of young stars like Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., the front office decided it was time for a new direction.

What led to Jenkins’ firing?

The decision came after months of internal frustration. The Grizzlies’ 2024–25 season has been marred by inconsistency, a lack of identity on the court, and a locker room that, according to reports, began to lose confidence in Jenkins’ leadership.

A source close to the team told Yahoo Sports:

“The energy had shifted. Players weren’t responding, and there was a feeling that Taylor’s message just wasn’t landing anymore.”

Compounding the issue were lingering challenges following Ja Morant’s past suspensions, roster injuries, and an inability to adapt the team’s system in a rapidly evolving Western Conference. The Grizzlies entered March with one of the worst records in the league, a shocking fall for a team that was once a playoff mainstay.

What did the Grizzlies say?

In an official statement, the organization thanked Jenkins for his years of service, highlighting his role in building “a culture of competitiveness and accountability” — but made it clear that change was necessary.

“We believe this team has a bright future, but to get there, a new voice is needed,” the statement read.

What’s Taylor Jenkins’ legacy in Memphis?

While his exit was abrupt, Jenkins’ time in Memphis wasn’t without highlights. He led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances from 2021 to 2023 and played a crucial role in developing a young, exciting core. Under his guidance, the Grizzlies built a tough, defensive identity and captured national attention as a rising contender.

Unfortunately, off-court distractions, on-court regression, and failure to adjust ultimately caught up with him.
