A Lake Villa man is facing multiple felony charges after Lake County Sheriff’s detectives say they found dozens of images and videos containing child sexual abuse material on his cellphone.
Christian J. Phillips, 33, who lives in the 39100 block of North Rustic Drive in unincorporated Lake Villa, was arrested this week following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Cybercrime Team.
How the Investigation Started
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, detectives with the Cybercrime Unit began looking into the case after learning that child pornography was being shared from an electronic device tied to the Rustic Drive address. Investigators worked to confirm the location and eventually obtained a search warrant for the home.
When detectives arrived to execute the warrant, they brought along Electronic Detection Canine Enzo, a K9 trained to sniff out hidden electronic devices that might be storing illegal material. With Enzo’s help, detectives located and seized a cellphone belonging to Phillips.
Investigators say a forensic review of the phone turned up dozens of images and videos classified as violent child sexual abuse material.
Felony Charges Filed, Court Appearance Set
On July 20, 2026, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved seven counts of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material against Phillips, each a Class 2 felony. He was taken into custody by sheriff’s detectives shortly after.
Phillips was scheduled to appear in court that same afternoon for a detention hearing, where a judge will decide whether he remains in custody while the case moves forward.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg praised the work of the department’s Cybercrime Team in a statement following the arrest. He said the unit, made up of detectives and K9 Enzo, brings extensive training and advanced investigative tools to cases involving the sexual exploitation of children online.
He added that the office remains committed to identifying offenders, holding them accountable, and working with law enforcement partners to protect children across Lake County.
As with all criminal cases, Phillips is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in a court of law.
The case has drawn strong reaction from the local community, with many residents online thanking the Cybercrime Team and K9 Enzo for their work on the investigation. It remains unclear whether Phillips has retained an attorney or entered a plea in the case so far.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details about how the original tip was received or whether any additional suspects may be connected to the investigation.
