LAS VEGAS — A man is dead, and another remains hospitalized in critical condition after a confrontation at a southeast Las Vegas Walmart escalated into gunfire early Tuesday morning, prompting an officer to open fire on the suspect.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers were called to the 5100 block of Boulder Highway, near Nellis Boulevard, around 6 a.m. after reports of a physical fight involving several people inside the store.
Officer Fired After Hearing Gunshot
According to LVMPD Captain Brandon Oris, the first officer to arrive heard what sounded like gunfire coming from inside the business. Moments later, a man came out of the store carrying a firearm, and the officer shot him. Paramedics tried to save the man at the scene, but he was pronounced dead.
Once officers went inside, they found a second man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Police believe the two men knew one another and that the shooting was not a random act, though detectives are still piecing together what triggered the fight in the first place.
Walmart issued a statement afterward saying the safety of its associates and customers remains a top priority, and that the company is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.
This marks the eighth officer-involved shooting recorded in the Las Vegas valley so far in 2026, according to LVMPD.
Neighbors Say the Violence Hit Close to Home
For many people who live and shop nearby, the shooting felt unusually personal. The store sits in a neighborhood where residents say they run errands almost every day, and several described the scene as jarring.
One shopper, who visits the location weekly with her family, said the moment made her realize violence can reach even the most familiar places. Another longtime customer said the incident left him thinking harder about how unpredictable public spaces have become, even somewhere as routine as a neighborhood Walmart.
A man who has lived in the area for more than three decades said he arrived to pick up a few items and instead walked into a chaotic scene he had never witnessed in his years living there.
Police have asked the public to steer clear of the area while the investigation continues. Officers have not released the identities of either man involved, and it remains unclear what sparked the initial altercation that set off the shooting.
LVMPD said additional information will likely be shared during a standard 72-hour update on the officer-involved shooting, a process the department typically follows to release further findings once the preliminary investigation moves forward.
