Mt. Sinai, NY, Fire Breaks Out at Cedar Beach Amid Fourth of July Storms

Cedar Beach fire

A fire tore through Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai on Saturday night, scorching beach grass and damaging at least one structure after strong winds carried embers across the shoreline during Fourth of July celebrations.

Suffolk County fire officials said they received a call about the blaze on Harbor Beach Road just after 9 p.m. Grass and an attached deck caught fire, though officials confirmed there were no injuries reported.

Video captured the following day showed large sections of blackened, charred beach grass where the flames had swept through.

Residents in the area said gusting winds, combined with holiday bonfires and fireworks activity, likely fueled the fire’s rapid spread along the beach.

Residents Describe Chaotic Scene

Residents took to social media to describe the scene as it unfolded. One Facebook user wrote that she was “stuck at Cedar Beach” as two houses appeared to catch fire nearby.

Others in the comments speculated about the cause, with several pointing to a combination of fireworks and wind gusts reportedly reaching as high as 85 miles per hour as likely contributing factors.

Reactions poured in from neighbors expressing shock and concern over the incident, with many calling it unsettling given how quickly the fire appeared to spread through the dry beach grass. While the exact cause has not been officially confirmed by fire investigators, the timing lines up with a night of widespread wind damage across Long Island.

Part of a Stormy Holiday Weekend

The Cedar Beach fire was just one of several incidents reported across Long Island as severe weather moved through the region over the holiday weekend. Suffolk and Nassau counties both declared states of emergency as thunderstorms brought damaging winds, heavy rain, and lightning, leaving thousands of Long Island Power Authority customers without electricity.

Southampton also declared a state of emergency following a powerful thunderstorm that struck the area. Meanwhile, additional rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected to continue impacting Long Island through Monday night, with forecasters warning of an increasing risk of flash flooding.

The string of weather-related emergencies came during an already eventful holiday stretch for the region, which also saw a fire break out on the Brooklyn Bridge during New York City’s fireworks display, along with several fireworks-related injuries and at least one death reported in Suffolk County.

As cleanup continues at Cedar Beach, officials have not indicated whether any further investigation into the fire’s cause is planned.
