El Dorado County, CA, Happy Fire Near Somerset Stopped, Evacuation Orders Downgraded

Happy Valley Fire Today

A vehicle malfunction sparked a fast-moving wildfire in El Dorado County on Tuesday afternoon, prompting evacuation orders before firefighters stopped its forward progress by evening.

The Happy Fire broke out near Mt. Aukum Road close to Somerset, according to Cal Fire’s Amador-El Dorado Unit. What started as smoke around 2 p.m. quickly grew into three separate spot fires burning roughly 10 acres total.

What Caused It

Fire officials traced the cause to a vehicle’s catalytic converter that overheated and threw off burning debris.

Nick Pimlott, a battalion chief with Cal Fire’s Amador-El Dorado Unit, explained how the malfunction turned into multiple fires:

“It started multiple fires along Mt. Aukum Road,” Pimlott said, describing how superheated pieces of the converter landed along the roadway.

He added that the incident shows how quickly small sparks can escalate.

“Something small can turn into something big really fast,” he said.

Evacuations And Road Closures

Crews reported 50% containment by 7 p.m. Tuesday. Progress on the fire’s spread had already stopped before 4 p.m.

Here’s how the situation unfolded for residents:

• Evacuation orders were issued for areas along Oak Leaf Circle and Mt. Aukum Road between Somerset Loop and Happy Valley Cutoff Road • Those orders were later downgraded to warnings, meaning residents could return home • Warnings remained active for the Blackhawk Lane and Dollhouse Road areas • A road closure stayed in place on Mt. Aukum Road between Somerset Loop and Happy Valley Cutoff Road • The affected area falls within the Pleasant Valley Perimeter Zone

By around 6 p.m., evacuation warnings across the fire zone were lifted entirely, though officials urged people to stay alert.

A Place To Regroup

While the fire threat eased, El Dorado County set up a temporary evacuation point at the Placerville Library on Fair Lane. Officials were careful to clarify what that space actually offers.

County officials said on social media it was a spot for evacuees to decide next steps and charge devices, not an overnight shelter. Pets were welcome as long as they were leashed or crated.

Staying Cautious

Even with containment progress, Cal Fire and county officials asked residents near the burn area to remain prepared in case conditions shift again. Dry vegetation and warm temperatures can allow small fires to reignite or flare up unexpectedly, especially in areas like Pleasant Valley where homes sit close to open land.

Residents who were under warnings were encouraged to keep evacuation bags ready and monitor official updates from the sheriff’s office and Cal Fire.

The incident adds to a growing list of vehicle-related ignition sources local fire agencies have flagged this season, as dry conditions across the region continue to raise wildfire risk heading into summer.

No injuries were reported in connection with the fire, and no structures were confirmed damaged as of Tuesday evening.
