A former Edinburg High School teacher and coach is now out on bond after turning himself in to police this week on a charge connected to an improper relationship with a student.
Christian Roxburgh surrendered to Edinburg CISD Police custody on Wednesday and was arraigned on a charge of improper relationship between an educator and a student.
According to Hidalgo County jail records, he was released the same day after posting a $25,000 bond.
Roxburgh had worked as a social studies teacher and coach at Edinburg High School. He resigned from that position, a fact confirmed to Channel 5 News by an Edinburg CISD spokesperson.
Despite the resignation, Roxburgh was still listed as an employee on the campus website as of Wednesday evening, suggesting the school’s records had not yet caught up with the personnel change.
District Response and Limited Information
In a news release, Edinburg CISD said it acted swiftly once it became aware of the situation, stating that the district “immediately took action consistent with district policy and state law” after learning of the allegations involving a former student.
The district did not release specifics about what those allegations actually involve, and officials say that further details will remain limited going forward.
This lack of disclosure is not arbitrary. The district explained that the limited information being shared is meant to protect the privacy of the student involved and to remain in compliance with federal student privacy laws.
Cases like this often place schools in a difficult position, balancing the community’s desire for transparency with legal obligations to shield minors from public exposure.
Edinburg CISD also addressed the emotional toll this kind of news can have on its school community.
The district acknowledged that the arrest of a former staff member on such a charge may be unsettling for students, parents, staff, and others connected to the campus.
In response, the district said that counseling and support resources will be made available to anyone who needs them as the situation continues to unfold.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
News of the arrest spread quickly across local social media, with many community members expressing shock and disappointment.
Commenters questioned how someone in a position of trust and authority could throw away a career and reputation, with some noting that he appeared to be a relatively young man who had built a future in education and coaching before this allegation surfaced.
As of now, the investigation remains active, and no further details about the nature of the relationship or how it came to light have been made public.
It is unclear whether additional charges could follow or whether other individuals at the school were aware of the situation before it was reported.
For now, Edinburg CISD says it will continue to follow district policy and applicable law as the case moves forward, while leaning on its support systems to help students and staff process the news.
The community will likely be watching closely for updates as more information becomes available through official channels, though officials have made clear that respecting the privacy of the student involved remains a top priority throughout the process.
