A Chester County police chase that began over an alleged retail theft ended with an officer shooting a 40-year-old man, but not before the suspect spent roughly 40 minutes hiding inside a stranger’s kitchen, according to the woman who lives there.
The incident unfolded Monday evening in North Coventry Township, Pennsylvania, starting just before 6:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call at the Lowe’s in Town Square Plaza off Pottstown Pike.
Police said they were searching for a man wanted for retail theft when the encounter escalated.
Authorities say the suspect, identified by police sources as Joshua McFadden, crashed a vehicle and fled on foot, setting off a chase through nearby woods and yards.
Police radio transmissions captured officers describing rising concern during the pursuit. One officer can be heard saying the suspect threatened to shoot him, though the officer noted he never actually saw a weapon in McFadden’s hands.
A Stranger in the Kitchen
As the chase continued, McFadden allegedly ran through residential yards before bursting through the back door of a home belonging to a woman who asked to be identified only by her first name, Pat. She said she was stunned when the man suddenly appeared in her kitchen, collapsed on the floor, and pleaded for water.
Pat said McFadden looked like he was in bad shape and begged her to let him stay.
She allowed him to rest, drink water, and even call his wife, but she refused his requests not to contact the police.
Despite the unsettling intrusion, Pat said the man never behaved aggressively toward her and never tried to come near her in a threatening way.
After letting him stay briefly, Pat texted her grandson, who came to the house and forced McFadden to leave.
It was only a short time later, just up the street, that police say McFadden climbed into a parked police vehicle near Kline and Lindberg avenues.
A neighbor, Linda Piotti, said she watched the man run through her property during the chase and specifically remembered him wearing pink sneakers as he cut across yards instead of sticking to the street.
Officer Opens Fire
According to a source who spoke with Action News, an officer with the North Coventry Police Department fired a service weapon at that point, striking McFadden in the chest.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, and as of the latest update, he remains alive. No officers were hurt during the incident.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office has taken over the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings throughout Pennsylvania.
In a statement, the DA’s office said the case remains active and ongoing, adding that more information will be released as it becomes available.
Pat, reflecting on the strange and frightening night, said the entire situation felt out of place for her usually quiet neighborhood.
She said it was unsettling to think about what could have happened in what she described as a nice, peaceful community.
Investigators have not yet released additional details about what specifically prompted the officer to fire, or what occurred in the moments leading up to the shooting near the police vehicle.
The case continues to develop as authorities piece together radio communications, witness accounts, and evidence from the scene.
