Cypress, CA, Man Uses Racial Slur, Grabs Minor at Arnold Park During Basketball Game

A disturbing incident at Arnold Park in Cypress, California has left local parents alarmed after a man reportedly grabbed a minor and directed racial slurs at a group of teenagers during a pickup basketball game.

The incident, shared by Cypress resident Amy Gunter on the Cypress, California Neighborhood Group Facebook page, has since sparked widespread concern among community members.

Teens Targeted During Pickup Basketball Game

According to Amy Gunter, her son, his friend, and his cousins were playing a pickup basketball game at the park when an unidentified man approached and grabbed her son’s friend by the arm.

The man then used a racial slur, specifically the n-word with the hard r, directed at the boys. When her son’s friend called his parents to report what happened, the man escalated the situation further by making threatening gestures toward them before leaving the area on a skateboard.

Gunter returned to the park the following day and photographed the man, later identified by the boys as wearing a green hoodie and green hat. Both her son and his friend confirmed the man in the photo was the same individual involved in the incident. Since the encounter, the boys have been reluctant to return to the park.

“My son and his friend are both minors, and since this incident, they have not wanted to go back to the park. Parents, please be aware and keep an eye out. We need to look out for one another and protect our kids,” Gunter wrote in her post.

Community Responds, Calls for Police Action

The post drew an immediate response from neighbors, many of whom urged Gunter to file a police report. Pauline Weldon commented, “Your son’s friend was assaulted. The use of the word suggests a hate crime. A police report needs to be filed.” Natasha Raquel Collard added, “I’d have a police report made because it sounds like he assaulted a minor.”

Anita Alvarez echoed similar concerns, stating,

“If an adult grabbed a minor, call the police.” Ryan Wu also weighed in, saying, “Maybe call the cops since it sounded like it will escalate to possible violence.”

Christina Carreon-Hernandez urged caution, reminding residents that going viral with photos and information can still be directed toward law enforcement.

“Video taping and pictures and broadcasting them and asking anyone if they know who he is, that information can be provided to the police directly,” she wrote.

Not all responses were supportive. One commenter, Red Rojo, questioned whether the teenagers may have contributed to the confrontation during the game, though his comment was quickly met with pushback from other neighbors. Lama Khadra pointed out,

“The individual in question is an adult,” while others firmly rejected any suggestion that justified the man’s behavior.

Kina Anderson-Altman defended Gunter’s decision to share the post publicly, writing,

“Its so sad that some of you missed the purpose of this post. She is taking the time to share and warn you about the situation so that the neighborhood was aware of what’s happening.”

At this time, it is unclear whether a formal police report has been filed. Residents in the Cypress area are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior at Arnold Park to local authorities.
