Chicago, Illinois, Divorce Lawyer, Dean S. Dussias, Passes Away, After 30-Year Legal Career
Chicago, IL — The legal community and the city of Chicago are mourning the passing of Dean S. Dussias, a highly respected family law attorney whose career spanned more than three decades.
Known for his quiet dignity, steady sense of purpose, and unwavering commitment to his clients, Dean left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of crossing paths with him, whether in the courtroom, the classroom, or everyday life.
Dean built his reputation representing entrepreneurs, executives, and other prominent individuals in high-profile and financially complex divorce cases. His approach was never flashy or combative for the sake of it.
Instead, he was the attorney people turned to when they needed someone calm, pragmatic, and genuinely focused on results. Colleagues often described him as the “get it done” lawyer, a title he earned through years of guiding clients through some of the most difficult chapters of their lives with discretion and care.
His philosophy was rooted in a simple but powerful belief: that most clients are better served by smart, early negotiation than by years of costly litigation.
He was known to say that too often, lawyers drag cases through the courts only for clients to end up in the same place they could have reached much sooner with proper counsel. That conviction shaped every case he handled.
A Record of Recognition That Speaks for Itself
Dean’s accomplishments in the legal field were remarkable. He became a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in 1999, a distinction held by only 1,600 attorneys across the entire United States.
That fellowship requires passing a rigorous examination and demonstrating substantial trial experience as lead counsel across a range of family law matters, including custody, child support, property division, and spousal support. He later served as Past President of the Illinois Chapter of that organization.
His peers consistently placed him among the best in his field. He received an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest possible designation, indicating that he had reached the height of professional excellence with the highest levels of skill and integrity.
He was listed in Best Lawyers in America, recognized by the Leading Lawyers Network as one of Illinois’ top family law attorneys, and named an Illinois Super Lawyer every single year since 2008, a distinction reserved for the top five percent of practicing attorneys in the state. Early in his career, Law Bulletin Media honored him as one of the “Forty Under 40” attorneys to watch in Illinois.
A Man of Culture, Community, and Purpose
Beyond his legal work, Dean was deeply connected to his community. Fluent in Greek, he was a proud member and former board member of the Hellenic Bar Association, which honored him with its Distinguished Professional Achievement Award in 2011.
He was also a member in good standing with the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Dean regularly gave lectures and wrote articles on the latest developments in family law, serving as a faculty member at the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education. He appeared frequently in the media to discuss divorce-related topics, sharing knowledge that helped ordinary people better understand a complicated and often overwhelming legal process.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Loyola University of Chicago and his law degree from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, going on to be admitted to the Illinois bar in 1991.
Dean Dussias carried himself with a rare combination of professionalism and humanity. His passing leaves a void in Chicago’s legal community that will be deeply felt for years to come. He is remembered not only for the cases he won, but for the lives he helped steady during moments of profound personal upheaval.
