Galesburg, Michigan, Server and WMU Graduate Whitney Elizabeth Learman Passes Away, Leaving Loved Ones!!!

Friends and loved ones are mourning the loss of Whitney Elizabeth Learman, a Galesburg, Michigan native whose warmth, empathy, and unwavering support touched the lives of everyone around her. News of her passing spread quickly across social media, where tributes poured in from friends, coworkers, and community members who described her as someone truly irreplaceable.

Whitney, who studied at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and went on to earn her degree from Western Michigan University in 2024, had built a life centered on connection and service.

She worked as a restaurant server at Cove Lakeside Bistro, a role she had held since June 2017, and had previously worked as a Financial Solution Specialist at Advia Credit Union and even briefly at Frito-Lay.

Those who knew her say she brought the same genuine care to every job and every person she encountered.

A Friend Like No Other

Friend Rachael Sealy was among the first to share a heartfelt tribute online.

“Life is so unfair,” she wrote. “You were always there with the best advice, a listening ear, and a heart big enough for everyone around you. You made it so obvious how much you loved your friends.”

Rachael added that the depth of her grief was only a measure of how deeply Whitney had been loved by all who knew her, and that she looked forward to hearing her laugh again someday.

Patricia Tyler, another close friend, described Whitney as someone who had helped pull her out of a truly dark period in her life. The two had bonded deeply over their shared empathy for others.

“You are my daughter’s titi and never got to hold her,” Patricia wrote, expressing both the depth of their friendship and the heartbreak of what was left unfinished.

A Soul Who Healed Others

Perhaps one of the most moving tributes came from Gwen Haugh Matthews, who described Whitney as having entered her life at one of her lowest moments and never leaving her side since.

Gwen, who lost her son Logan, said Whitney was like a daughter to her. Whitney had been only the second person to reach out on Logan’s birthday, just days before her passing, writing,

“I love you. Happy birthday to my twin! He definitely sent me to you.”

Gwen said Whitney had agreed to accept the beads at a walk honoring those in need, and even allowed Gwen to write and read a story about her at the event.

“She healed a part of my soul,” Gwen wrote. “I’m so honored to have been a part of birthdays, college graduation, her wedding, and all things Whitney.”

Friends remembered her through personal touchstones, including Tom Petty music, the movie Matilda, and small sentimental details that made Whitney uniquely herself. She was married and had built a life full of love and meaningful relationships.

Whitney Elizabeth Learman was a graduate, a wife, a server, and above all else, a friend who showed up when it mattered most.

Her community is grieving deeply, but those who loved her are holding onto every memory, every piece of advice she gave, and every moment she proved that love shown freely is the greatest gift one person can give another.
