Frankfort, KY Teen KeAaron Jones, 15, Franklin County High School Sophomore, Dies After Rare Spinal Cancer Battle Leaving Family and Community Heartbroken

Franklin County, Kentucky, is mourning the loss of one of its brightest young stars. KeAaron Jones, a 15-year-old sophomore at Franklin County High School, passed away on June 9th after a courageous battle with Diffuse Midline Glioma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord.

His death has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, classmates, teammates, teachers, and an entire community that rallied around him during his final months.

KeAaron was the kind of young man people simply gravitated toward. By all accounts, he carried himself with a warmth and humility that made everyone around him feel at ease.

He was active in volleyball, basketball, choir, and band at Franklin County High School, earning a place in the Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Choir and receiving the Paul Wyler Spirit Award for Resiliency. That last honor, in hindsight, feels deeply fitting for a boy who faced the unimaginable with a smile still on his face.

When Knee Pain Became Something More

What began as seemingly routine discomfort gradually revealed itself to be something far more serious. KeAaron’s mother, Keana Jones, described how the initial knee pain was first suspected to be a torn MCL.

When scans showed only inflammation, the family felt cautiously hopeful. Physical therapy began. But the symptoms did not improve.

Numbness, tingling, weakness in his lower limbs, and difficulty walking soon followed, eventually leading to the devastating diagnosis in December 2025. He had a tumor of the spinal cord, later identified as Diffuse Midline Glioma with the H3K27M mutation, a fast-progressing cancer with no known prevention. He was just 15 years old.

A Community That Refused to Stand Aside

From the moment word spread, Franklin County wrapped its arms around the Jones family. In April 2026, Franklin County High School hosted the “Turn it Up!” volleyball tournament in KeAaron’s honor, raising over $10,000 for the family.

His mother had stepped away from work entirely to be by his side through every treatment, every hospital stay, every difficult day.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover medical costs, travel for specialized care, medications, and basic household needs, ultimately raising over $11,000 from nearly 200 donors.

His volleyball coach, Tom Marshall, perhaps said it best:

“Knowing the diagnosis, they chose to smile and make others feel better.”

That single sentence captures something essential about who KeAaron was. Even as his body was failing him, his spirit refused to dim.

Principal Joey Thacker described him as “a light to his classmates, teammates, teachers, and community,” someone who left behind an unmatched legacy of kindness and humility. His grandmother shared the heartbreak of his passing on social media, writing with raw grief about a grandson who gained his wings surrounded by love.

KeAaron Jones dreamed of becoming an architect. He never got that chance. But in his short life, he built something lasting in the people who knew him.
