Walnut Grove High School Standout and UK Football Player Nicholas “Nic” Smith, 20, Passes Away, Leaving His Family!!!

The University of Kentucky football program is grieving the sudden loss of defensive lineman Nicholas “Happy” Smith, who passed away on June 8, 2026, at just 20 years old.

The university confirmed his death in an official statement, though no cause of death has been released. An initial investigation, according to the Associated Press, does not indicate foul play was involved.

Smith, who went by “Big Happ” among his teammates, was a redshirt freshman heading into his sophomore season with the Wildcats.

He had arrived at Kentucky ahead of the 2025 season as a three-star recruit from Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia, choosing the Wildcats over interest from Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern. He sat out his first year, preserving four years of eligibility, and was expected to make his on-field mark in the coming season.

A Young Man With Big Dreams

Beyond football, Smith was a student in the Community Leadership and Development program within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment.

His player biography on the Kentucky athletics website revealed a young man with a clear sense of purpose. His dream, he wrote, was to one day start a food business after his NFL career. The best advice he said he had ever received summed up his personality well: “You are what you believe.”

In high school, Smith was a force on the defensive line. As a senior for the Walnut Grove Warriors, he recorded 40 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 16 quarterback hurries.

He also played basketball, showing the kind of athleticism and competitive drive that caught recruiters’ attention across the South.

His nickname started as “Happy,” a reflection of the energy and warmth he brought to those around him, before his teammates affectionately lengthened it to “Big Happ.”

A Program and Community in Mourning

Kentucky head coach Will Stein spoke on behalf of the entire program in a heartfelt statement following the announcement.

“Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him. This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory,” Stein said.

The university echoed that grief in its own statement, asking the public to respect the privacy of Smith’s family, friends, and teammates during what it called a tremendous loss. It also reminded students and members of the campus community that support resources are available through the Office for Student Success, recognizing that many will need help processing this loss.

Smith’s death sent shockwaves through the college football world, with tributes pouring in for a young man remembered as much for his character as for his potential on the field.

He was a sophomore who had barely begun to write his story at Kentucky, and yet those who knew him say he had already left a lasting impression.

He was born in 2006 and died in 2026, twenty years that, by all accounts, were lived with joy, purpose, and a spirit that touched everyone around him. The Wildcats will carry his memory forward.
